Understanding the GST62 Form: A Guide to Filing GST/HST Returns for Canadian Businesses

The GST62 form, officially known as the “Goods and Services Tax (GST)/Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) Return (Non-Personalized),” is an important document for Canadian businesses and self-employed individuals required to file their GST/HST returns. This form is specifically designed for those who did not receive a personalized GST return. At Cross & Company, our experienced accountants are ready to assist you in understanding who needs to file the GST62 form, along with the necessary steps and requirements for a successful filing process.

What Is the GST62 Form?

All businesses registered to collect GST or HST are required to file regular returns, reporting taxable sales for each reporting period and calculating the GST/HST owed to the federal government. The GST62 form is used by businesses when they do not receive a pre-printed personalized return form (GST34). This situation may arise if the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) does not have your updated mailing address or if you’re new to filing GST/HST returns. Unlike the personalized GST34 form, the GST62 is a blank template, requiring you to manually enter essential business  information.

When and How to File GST62

The filing deadline for the GST62 depends on your business’s reporting period, which can be annual, quarterly, or monthly. Annual filers typically need to submit their returns by three months after the end of their fiscal year, while quarterly and monthly filers usually have one month after the end of their reporting period to file.

When completing your GST62 form, you’ll need to provide your personal business information, including:

  • Business number
  • Company name
  • Reporting period
  • Due date for the GST/HST return

You can view your reporting period and the due dates for your expected returns by logging into the CRA’s My Business Account. The GST62 can be filed online through NETFILE or by mailing a paper copy to the CRA. Payment can be made through various channels, including online banking, at your financial institution, or by cheque to the CRA.

Failing to file your GST62 form on time could result in penalties and interest charges on any unpaid taxes. Even if your business had no transactions during the period, a missed filing can still incur penalties.
